Careful work for owners who want one thing done properly

Rimba Labs is a small consultancy. We scope AI arrangements for small businesses in Malaysia that want to try something specific without committing to a platform they haven't tested.

How Rimba Labs came about

The name comes from the Malay word for jungle — because the understorey of a rainforest is where most of the actual work happens, out of sight, steady and patient. That's roughly how we think about our role in a business: not the canopy, not the visible flourish, but the arrangement underneath that keeps things growing.

We started because we kept meeting small business owners in Pahang and across peninsular Malaysia who had heard a lot about AI but hadn't found a way into it that felt right for their size and situation. The tools available were either too large, too vague, or came attached to subscriptions they'd need to commit to before knowing whether the thing worked.

So we built something smaller: a scoping engagement that defines one task, one measure of success, and one condition for stopping. From there, business owners can decide whether to go further. A lot of them do. Some don't, and that's fine too — they leave with a written brief they can hand to anyone.

We keep the practice deliberately small. Fewer clients, longer relationships, and the ability to say honestly when something should be switched off rather than renewed.

What we stand by

  • Write it down first

What success looks like and what would make us recommend stopping — both in writing before work starts.

  • People stay in the loop

Nothing reaches your customers without a person on your team reviewing it first.

  • Honest about cost vs. use

We track what subscriptions actually cost against what they actually do. If the numbers don't justify it, we say so.

  • One thing at a time

We don't propose a platform overhaul. We propose one task, properly scoped, and let results determine what comes next.

The people behind the work

A small team is the point, not a limitation. Everyone here works directly with clients rather than managing accounts at a distance.

How we work

These are the standards we apply to every engagement, regardless of size.

Written Scope Before Work

Every engagement begins with a written record of what is being attempted, how success will be measured, and what would constitute a reason to stop. This document belongs to you.

Data Handled with Care

We handle only the data needed for the task at hand. Customer contact details used in follow-up arrangements are not shared with third parties and are deleted when the arrangement ends.

Monthly Written Record

Clients on Ongoing Care receive a short note each month listing every change made and why. Nothing is adjusted silently. The quarterly review includes a recommendation on whether to continue each running arrangement.

Human Review Required

No drafted content reaches your customers without a member of your staff reviewing and sending it. This is not optional — it is part of how we design every follow-up arrangement.

We Recommend Stopping

If the conditions written at the start indicate that an arrangement is not working, we say so directly. We don't extend engagements for the sake of continuity. Clients are not charged for arrangements that should be wound down.

Subscription Cost Tracking

Under Ongoing Care, we review what each tool subscription costs against what it actually does for the business. If a tool isn't pulling its weight, it gets flagged at the quarterly review.

AI integration for small business in Malaysia — what that actually means

Most of the conversation around AI in business is aimed at large organisations with dedicated technical teams. Small business owners in Malaysia — running trading companies, professional services, retail outlets, or small manufacturing operations — find themselves in a different position: they've heard that AI can help, but the tools available assume a scale they don't have, and the people selling those tools often can't say clearly what the return will look like.

The work we do at Rimba Labs is narrow by design. We look at one task — usually something where time is being lost because a response didn't get sent, or because someone spent an afternoon writing something that could have been drafted faster. We define what doing that task with AI support would look like, what success would mean in numbers the business already tracks, and what a reasonable trial period would be.

We're based in Kuantan, which means we work primarily with businesses in Pahang and the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, though we take on clients from other states where the work can be done remotely. We communicate in English and Bahasa Malaysia and are familiar with the practical constraints that small Malaysian businesses actually face — staffing, cash flow timing, and the reality that most owners are already doing several jobs at once.

The pricing is fixed and published. The scope is written. The ownership of any document we produce belongs to you. Those aren't marketing positions — they're just how we prefer to work.

A short conversation is usually enough to work out whether there's a reasonable first step. No preparation needed on your end.
